Certain polluting processes have to be authorised under the provisions of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 or permitted under the Pollution Prevention and Control Act 1999. Bromsgrove has 25 of these processes. Fees are charged for the work involved in the initial licensing process and for yearly inspections.
Complaints of black/dark smoke from Commercial & Trade premises are investigated under the provisions of the Clean Air Act 1993 and depending on the circumstances either informal or formal action taken.
Complaints of general smoke nuisance from domestic, commercial and industrial bonfires are investigated. Initially, standard letters are sent out with appropriate literature, advising those persons causing problems of the legal situation & encouraging them to dispose of their rubbish by means other than that of burning. The Environmental Strategy Unit feed into this process in their Agenda 21/Sustainability role.
Although not in a Radon affected area, enquiries with respect to Radon are dealt with by the section and appropriate advice given in conjunction with The Building Control Section.
The Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers Regulations 1992 requires that all property owners register all of these devices with the local authority. If yours is not, contact the Health and Safety Unit to register.
The purpose of this is to prevent or control the spread of legionellosis (including Legionnaires disease).
